jumping into action

This weekend, my husband received a generous, and if I do say so myself, frightening birthday gift from one of his closest friends. While not something you can unwrap and be surprised by, the gift of a bungee jump certainly has the shock value that one can hope accompanies good gift giving. I am happy to report that he, along with the four others that were much braver than I, survived the 150 foot jump. And not only did they survive but they all survived with smiles on their faces, full of adrenaline and excitement and the desire to do it all over again. My fear of bridges combined with my lack of interest in throwing myself off of one had me with my feet planted firmly on the ground.
Bungee jumping isn’t on my list of things ‘to do’ in my life but I, like most people, do have a list of several things that I hope to accomplish or experience in my lifetime. While I haven’t actually created a bucket list or 101 things to do in 1001 days, I definitely dream of being able to put checkmarks next to some exciting, scary or adventurous personal goals. Jumping out of a plane with a parachute appealed to me much more than jumping off a bridge with a bungee cord so skydiving is something I can now proudly say I’ve done… and would highly recommend! And now that I have a couple half marathons under my belt, running the full 26.2 miles will be next on my list of activities to complete. It’s satisfying to know that I’m going through life accomplishing my goals and completing tasks no matter how scary, unattainable, crazy or physically demanding they may seem. While some items can be fun, some can be serious and some can be good for humanity, taking the time to decide what you want out of life and what you want to be able to say you accomplished can be such a motivating exercise that once it’s down on paper, it’s hard to ignore. And that may be why I have such a strong desire to see the ball drop in Times Square on New Years Eve, swim with dolphins in crystal clear water and have an exhibition dedicated solely to my own artwork…because looking back on my life, I hope to be happy with all that I’ve done and hope I never have to say “I wish I’d done that…”.

What’s on your list? Would you ever go bungee jumping?

I went bungee jumping once and I hated it!! I'm not a thrill seeker, at all! But at least I can say I've tried it and I don't like it. :] Awhile back I made a bucket list, right now the most important thing on it is ataking my fiance's parents on a cruise.

I've no desire to bungee either, but love the idea of making your dream list! I've run half-marathon distances, but have given that up and concentrating on some other goodies :)

I have a long list of things I want to accomplishment- it's all about enriching our life experiences, isn't it?

I'd like to try sky diving or paragliding but not bungee jump. Those two just sound more appealing.

My husband bungee jumped when he was just out of college, liked it but said he wouldn't do it again. Neither of us have the desire to skydive but I had a cousin who was in a club and went around the world doing it. She said it was the best feeling in the world for her. I'd like to swim with wild dolphins as well, my daughter did it in New Zealand and said it's unexplainable.

Wao, you are so brave! I could never do that nor bungee jumping either. I have less ambitious goals like learning French someday... jaja. Good for you to do something so bold and exciting!

Im afraid im much too scaredy to do either of those- although i think id rather skydive than bungee jump. Id hate that constant sinking falling feeling!
But good on you for giving skydiving a go..and your efforts in running a marathon are inspiring.

okay bungee jumping is not for me because, like you, i have little desire to throw myself off a bridge dangling by a thread.

i would, however, love to visit the pyramids in egypt and ride a camel. it's a dream of mine :)

I love that your hubbie's friend gave him an experience for his birthday. That's a really cool gift.

I don't have a need to bungee jump or sky dive, I'm not that kind of a thrill seeker. Scary things are just that to me...scary! lol!

I would love to write a picture book, though. A very safe and low to the ground dream.

I really love this.

Now i really really want to make my own bucket list. i love lists, even crossing off the easiest task is really satisfying :)

i would like to go sky diving but i don't know if i can bring myself to do it. maybe one day.

I am moving in a few months, from NY to Cali, which is a huge step for me. I am both terrified and and thrilled ;)

Wow, sky diving! That's so cool! I would love to do that! Also, get good enough to go heli skiing, climb kilamonjaro, see as many countries as I possibly can, and so many other things!

I would do the same thing you did. Keep feet planted firmly on the ground! I have a bucket list but bungee jumping is not on there. Good luck with the marathon goal! Good job accomplishing all your goals!:)

Ah I have to say I think I would be way too scared to go bungee jumping. OR skydiving! haha. That's awesome that your husband went and even more awesome that you have skydived before! I have a bunch of ideas in my head of things I want to do before I die, but I've never really put a pen to paper and got it all down. I should do that one of these days...

Your husband is a brave man! That's a pretty unique gift too!

I could never get the guts to do that myself though!

I enjoy running so I would really love to run a marathon. I know it takes lots of practice but I would love to do it.

I have an intense fear of water. I would love to overcome that, but I don't know, just thinking of being alone in th deep end of the ocean sends a chill down by spine.

I would probably try bungee jumping and I agree skydiving is alot of fun!

I've done it. I went last summer with a bunch of amazing friends of mine in Costa Rica. We were on a missions trip and on our last day we all bungeed off a 270 foot bridge. The initial jump was super scary (your mind is like freaking out trying to tell you that what you are about to do is suicide) but one I was falling it was AMMMMAAAZZZING. I loved it and I would absolutely do it again.
