so much to do, so little time

I know it can be argued that time is relative or that time is absolute and while I can’t seem to wrap my head around what either one really means, what I can wrap my head around is that time is a funny thing. It goes fast when you need it to slow down and when you want it to hurry up, it takes forever to get to where you want it to be. This past week I’ve been so much busier than I thought I would be and there just haven’t been enough hours in the day to get done all that I had hoped.

Whether it’s minutes, hours, days or years, it’s amazing the mind games time can play. When you’re counting down to a vacation or an exciting event, the days seem to drag on and getting from 10 days down to 1 day seems like an eternity. But then all of a sudden, once you’re kicking back on the beach or trekking through the rainforest, 10 days goes by in the blink of an eye and, before you know it, you’re back at your desk counting down the hours until the work day ends. The saying “time flies” never seems to be wrong!

I once worked at a library wholesaler where I often had to pack and ship books. While not the most stimulating work, it became necessary to fight boredom by having a little fun with the time…like seeing how many boxes we could pack before taking a break or guessing how long it would take to do large orders. What really became a challenge was trying not to look at the clock until we thought 10, 15 or 30 minutes had passed – a task more challenging than one would think and all the more exciting when your guess was right on! And now, there are days like today, when I wish I could take all those wasted minutes and tack them on to the time I’ve got left in the night ahead of me. So whether I’m killing time, wasting time or saving time, I’ll take every moment in time that I can get...if it's 10 more minutes of sleep, 5 more minutes until a deadline or 1 more minute watching TV with my husband, I want to make the most of every minute.

How do you make more time in your day? Do you wish time would speed up or slow down?

This is such a great post! Time is so tricky. I always feel like it's rushing by, like sand through my fingers. (or some other cheesy metaphor, but you know what I mean)

Sometimes I wish I could slam on the brakes of time. Or at least slow it down. It all goes by way too fast.

I have totally been contemplating this lately! I feel like I don't have enough time to carry out the mental list of things I'd like to do in a given day, week, month. It all seems to slip by so quickly. As for how I try to find more time, starting this weekend I'm going to start using an hour of my night to lay out my outfit and make breakfast so I'm not completely nuts running out of time in the morning.

My husband and I have been talking about how to use our time better so that we can have some "down time" on the weekends. Seems every minute of every day is full, which is a good thing I suppose. I get up very early each day, sometimes like 4:30 a.m. just so I can get more done. I think when we are doing things like laundry or dishes, time should stand still for that, as a bonus for doing chores.

Just the other day, a friend asked me who decided that a day should consist of 24 hours. I couldn't give an answer because even though there's probably a scientific answer out there, time is fluid. it's so difficult to measure. Especially while dealing with a crisis, time goes by either SO quickly or slowly-- while waiting for a diagnosis or for the ambulance to arrive or dealing with all the craziness.

Now with the weather changing, I get all stressed out that I don't have my work/errands done before sun down.. it's so much more stressful in the winter when I see the sky becoming darker and I'm still in my office!

oh, time. that's one of those things that i go back and forth with. sometimes time goes slow and other times, i can't even catch my breath!

I wish I had advice about finding more time in a day but I'm always scrabbling around for those extra minutes. I wish the day was longer. I feel more stressed for time because it gets darker earlier too. I wish I had all the time in the world.

Working in a library must have been cool.

Sloooo down definitely! But wait... when I'm anxious about something, I want it to speed up. I guess it's a combo of both ;) xo

Sometimes, I wish there were more hours in a day so I have enough time to do everything. On slow, boring days, I wish it moves by faster!

i have been thinking about this alot lately too!

i am conflicted. Sometimes i want to fast foward, other times rewind. Most often i wish i could just press pause.

I could not agree more. The minutes seem to tick backwards while at work but when out for a date with the Hubby the night flies by and before you know it it's Monday again. Why is that?
I'm with Gina, there are certain moments that I just wish I could press pause and have that moment last a really long time.

At work I wish it would speed up. It only does once I get home though! I do make lists to help pass the time. I love lists.

Loved this post and everything you mentioned is so true! I've always said and talked with people about how whenever we're having the best time ever, the time goes by so fast. It's almost not fair...

Great blog!
