hostess with the mostess

I think it was my brother who once said when I was younger than guests is just another word for cleaning. This week, I really feel like he could not be more correct. As my husband and I prepare to welcome some friends over this weekend for a little housewarming party, our list of things to fix up, touch up and clean up never seems to end. While I would definitely consider us to be a clean couple, it's amazing the scrutiny our house is suddenly under as we prepare it to be seen by other people. So while guests may mean a whole lot of scrubbing, sweeping, dusting and dishes, it also means a good time. I truly am excited to be having people over and while it may mean a little more work before, during and after the party, it also means that I get to play hostess and that’s something that I really like doing. We’ve never really had the space to have a party, or even much of a gathering beyond a couple of lucky people, and yet hosting one is something that I’ve always looked forward to. I’ve longingly looked at pretty pictures of perfect place settings and bookmarked fun foods and delicious desserts. I’ve dreamed of dining with dear friends over lots of laughs in the luxury of my own home. I can’t say I’m a pro party planner and while this weekend won’t quite be the party I’ve been picturing as it’s a little more low key and casual than my dinner party dreams, I’m really looking forward to welcoming my guests with open arms. The extra work is worth it to be the one watching for empty wine glasses, filling my guests full of finger foods and making the night a memorable one. So with the cleaning supplies going back into the closet, the bar stocked and the fridge loaded, all we’ll have left to do is cross our fingers our friends show up! Should be fun!

Do you like to be the host? Any tips for the perfect party?

I love being the host but it's definitely a lot of work. I think a really nice touch is giving them something to take home. Like homemade cookies, snack or just something nice. People appreciate the effort!

I don't mind it every now and then! Dinner parties are so much fun. You should just think of having a clean house as an added bonus! a gotta do it, eventually, anyhow. :]

Oh my gosh it's so true! But I'm grateful for guests, because otherwise my apartment wouldn't be nearly as neat, haha!

Hosting is fun, but never as easy as you'll hope it'll be! My secrets-lots of cheese, especially the simpler stuff you're sure everyone will turn up their noses at (a good Irish cheddar always disappears first), music everyone can enjoy and plenty of paper towels for the morning after!

yes! i couldn't agree more. it's definitely a lot of work to throw a party, but i love it so much. i'm the type to pick a theme and then work on all sorts of lovely/fun details which fit. i want people to have plenty to do, see, and use as fodder for conversation, even if it's just a small get together with friends. our apartment is super tiny, but we have a big front courtyard where we threw our pre-wedding bash. i hope we can throw another party soon. have a fun time this weekend!

I *love* to be a host!

My tips are - make sure there are a few forms of entertainment; have a couple different food options (at LEAST a couple different food options); make sure people know if they should BYOB but also make sure to have some extra beer/wine laying around just in case.

i enjoy playing host, pampering my guests with lots of good food. but i must enjoy myself too.

one thing i do is plan foods that can be made the day before. desserts usually fit into that category. dips, fillings, even just cut stuff up ready to put together on the day. gives you lots of free time to mingle and have fun too.

It sounds so fun! I can't to hear how it went :) I love being the hostess, but in a one bedroom apartment I haven't been able to have many people over. It sounds like your party will be great!

I always like to give people something to take home at the end of the night. I think it makes it special.

i absolutely love it - my boyfriend helps out a lot which definitely makes things easier. i'm sure it would be more of a hassle, and i would probably hate doing it if all the work was placed on my shoulders.
